Third battle of Panipat
THIRD BATTLE OF PANIPAT
This battle took place in Panipat on 14 January 1761, at Panipat, about 60 miles north of Delhi between northern expeditionary force of the Maratha Empire and the king of Afghanistan, Ahmad Shah Durrani with two Indian Muslim allies-The Rohilla Afghans of the Doab, and Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Oudh.
Background of the 3rd Battle of Panipat
The decline of Mughal empire following the 27 year Mughal Martha war(1680-1707) had led to rapid territorial gains for the Maratha empire. Under Peshwa Baji Rao Gujarat, Malwa came under Maratha empire. Finally, In 1737, Baji rao defeated Mughals on the outskirts of Delhi and bring much to former Mughal territories south of Delhi in his territory.
After that the battle was fought between Mughals and the Marathas, both sides around 60000-70000 people give up their lives.
