The Ganesh chaturthi is most famous celebrated festival in India. In 2021 this festival is celebrated on 10 September. It was celebrated with full enjoyment in Mumbai, at there bhagwan Ganesh is known as laal bagh ke raja.
The reason behind the lal bagh ka raja is famous in India
Lalbaugcha Raja is the popular Ganesh idol of the Lalbaugcha Raja Sarvajsnik Ganeshotsav mandal. The mandal formly known as "Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal",Lalbaug was founded in 1934 at Lalbuag market at Lalbaug market by the fisherman of the Koli community.
The mandal was founded because of a vow(navas) for construction of the present Lalbaugcha at its existing place.The market place at Peru Chawl was shutdown in 1932. Hence, the fisherman and the vendors who used to sit in the open vowed to Ganesh for permanent place for their market. With the consistent efforts and support of the then local councillor Kuwarji Jethalal Shah, Shayamrao Vishnu Bodhe , V.B Korgaonkar, Ramchandra Tawte, Nakhwa Kokam Mama, Bhaushaeb Shinde, U.A rao and local residents, the lord Rajabai Tayyaabali agreed to give a plot for construction of a market.
As fulfilment of their wish, the fisherman and traders established the Ganesh idol on 12 September 1934. The idol was dressed in the customary fashion of fisherman. Since that day, this idol of has become popular as it is believed he fulfills the wishes of devotees. The mandal was formed in the era when the freedom struggle was as its peak.
In covid 19 pandemic , the Lalbaucha Raja Sarvajanik Ganeshotsav Mandal cancelled its traditional festivals for the time in its in 86 years of its existence. instead focus on campaign to raise awareness about the virus.
Idol
The Lalbaugcha Raja Ganpati idol has been organised by the Kambli family for over eight decades.The family have their workshop in a little lane off the main road in lalbaug, not very far from pandal.
The father of Ratnakar kambli (the head of family) was a sculpture of idols and had roaming exhibitions at festival across Maharashtra.He began organizing the idol for Lalbaugcha Raja in 1935.After his demise in 1952, his eldest son Venktaesh took over and , after his death,Ratnakar kambli, the currengt head of family, started designing idol. Kambli arts make the parts of Lalbaugcha Raja idol at his workshop, these are taken to thepandal where they are assembled and painted.Finally Ratnakar, who is nearly 80 years old, goes to the pandal and draws the eyes. The height around 18-20 ft.
